Farmhouse Sink Project

Farmhouse Sink Project
My favorite antique stool is tall enough to let the little ones reach the faucet.

Finding ‘THE sink’ seems to play a major role in renovating rooms with sinks in our house. Finding THIS sink meant driving almost an hour, spending another hour talking with the seller about country living, driving back home and watching it sit, waiting for the right time to rip out the old vanity and start installing the new one. The very sad fact about this sink is that I recently sold it (GASP!). I know, I know! But the hubby hated it a strong kind of hate and I get it. I would hope he would listen to me should he ever do something that I especially dislike. He agreed that I could create a similar sink to the downstairs bathroom where I took an old buffet and converted it into a sink, so I am happy :). Plus, selling this one funded the entire bathroom remodel currently in progress, so that makes me happy, too!

This cool little basket system was on clearance at Target. Each kid had one for their toothbrush, their own toothpaste and a cup 🙂

The first stage of the bathroom renovation was entitled ‘Get That Nasty, Moldy, Stinky 70s Sink Out of My House’. I honestly did not care what replaced it, it HAD to go. It was beyond nasty, and thinking about it makes me gag a little, so let’s move on. I ripped that bad boy out and hauled it to the dump with a big old smile on my face :). I made the base cabinet after months and months of trying to find a cool antique piece that could hold this massive sink, but found nothing the right size. Building it was an adventure, and I learned how to use a Kreg Jig, a skill which has come in handy for other projects! It cost around $100 to make because I bought the more expensive oak plywood. It took a few days to make and paint before my 10 -year old son helped me haul the pieces upstairs where we used it for almost 2 years!

Every piece has a story, I tell you! This faucet was found randomly while going with my neighbor to pick up an unrelated Craiglist item for her house!

When our toilet started to leak just before Christmas (‘Oh yeah, mom, I forgot to tell you the toilet upstairs has been leaking for a few days…’) everything had to come out, and the toilet had to be thrown out. It has been empty for a couple months now as I prepare to learn how to tile and finally get everything put back together.

This was just the first step, like many others in our house! I am not set on finishing everything and having a ‘perfect’ house to live in because honestly, if it were all done, what would I do with myself?! Next steps; new tile, install new toilet, make a new sink, keep the kids from using my bathroom 🙂
